recent acquisitions

I picked up these two HoF relics in the past two weeks or so. Things have been such a mish-mash of my time lately that I forget when I got them exactly, but they are both new to my collection.

Ty Cobb is a dual bat relic from 2009 Topps Tribute, numbered 62/75. Mel Ott is a jersey and comes from this years tribute and is numbered 24/75. Collecting Hall of Fame relics is tricky due to the demand. I really don't like paying huge sums of money on one card, and thankfully I haven't had to yet. Seemingly everyone knows these guys, among other HoFers, so their demand is high. That and the fact that these guys played in the early portion of the 1900s, makes for great relic cards. I'd love to get my hands on something related to Honus Wagner or Cy Young, but those have proven to be difficult so far. Like I have mentioned before, I'm a sucker for baseball history and the early guys who were at the top of the game in the days of the dead-ball era and the depression era are all fascinating to me.

mel's shirt

As some of you readers know, I have begun collecting Mel Ott cards. I wanted to collect a retired player while collecting an active player (Vernon Wells...but you already knew that), a player that I would seek his cards out and get what I can. Well, I have maybe 8 or so thus far, with 25 more on the way (thanks eBay seller, here is your dollar). The local shop has a Mel Ott relic, the one pictured above in fact. He wants $50 for it, which isn't bad considering it books at $80. I got this one on eBay for $7.50 (and $2.50 shipping). It's fantastic, I love the old feel of the material. It must have been sweltering to wear these old uniforms, they seem so thick. It's not numbered but it probably should be, I mean, how many of his uniforms could there be floating around? Maybe Upper Deck found a stash of them.

In other news, I have sent out most of the boxes from the clearance, most should be arriving today or within a few days. I hope that you guys enjoy what I put into each one. I am prepping some more lots to send out and I'll be posting it up soon, once I think of a couple more. Now, I will be making only one of each lot this time around and if I sent you a lot in the first round, I won't be able to for the next. Sorry, but I'm trying to make it fair to everyone who reads the blog here, so one for each reader who claims one seems the most fair to me. Again, enjoy and thanks for reading!

ebay goodness final

Here are the final six from the $6.99 lot:

The Sizemore, Gonzalez and Figgins are just your run of the mill swatches. The favorites are the others: the Bill Hall letter is signed on the 'K' in gold, the double swatch of Morneau and Clark is awesome. I remember having a bunch of Will Clark's when I was a kid, and Morneau used to play in New Britain. The best of the whole lot though is the Aparicio. The fabric is a beige color due to the age (I'm guessing), or the type of fabric they used back then. Either way its great to have a HOFer relic in the collection. All in all a great bunch of cards for only seven bucks, I would have figured someone would have at least bid on it. Oh well.

ebay goodness part 2

Here is part two of my $6.99 eBay relic lot:

Some ok cards here. A bunch of 2008 SP Legendary Cuts (with two more tomorrow actually) shown here. Some boring plain white swatches except the nice pinstripe in the Derrek Lee. The Oswalt is actually 4 different pieces (or at least aligned to look that way). The Manny is a gray swatch which is ok, even if he's a Red Sock. Stay tuned for the final part to be posted up tomorrow, with my favorite three (plus three others that are ok too).

ebay goodness

Recently I picked up that Adam Lind plate off of eBay and I picked up this guy too:

Aaron Hill's short print magenta plate. Another one no one touched, thankfully. The seller also had some interesting auctions. One of which was a lot of relics from various players and sets. I watched it, and again, no one touched it. I put a bid in and won it with me being the only bid. It included a total of 16 relics from Upper Deck and Topps for $6.99 plus $3.00 shipping. I will post the first bit of them today and the other two over the next two days. Here is lot 1:

2 Ginter's, a Chicle and a 2010 206. Three gray swatches and a bat, pretty good.

four of a kind

I don't usually purchase cards if I already have them. In some cases though I'll make an exception. Here is an exception:

The top two I purchased from eBay, and the bottom two I received in trades. The most recent being today (the gray) from The Troll. The two gray swatches are identical but the two whites are a different material, which is why I wanted them. If I happen to find any different colors of this card I'll be sure to get those too. Maybe a black perhaps? looks like I'll be hitting up eBay soon...

part one

Since there is little activity around here, I thought I would go through some of my favorite Vernon Wells special cards. Relics, Autos, etc. Lets begin, shall we?

The top card is part of a set that I can't find much info on. I know the set exists, and I know the set had many parallels but I cannot find much info regarding this parallel. On with the card itself. Its super shiny, numbered 1/5 and has a great piece of relic embedded on there. A great multi-color patch card, and probably my favorite. The middle card is from Topps Finest. It is not numbered but is shiny and has a nice blue piece of jersey on there. I like it because its not white like most all the relics you find out there. The final card is from the 2004 Playoff set. As you can see it is a dual relic. I'm a big fan of bat cards, and dual relics are always cool. Yes, it has the dreaded white jersey, but the bat makes up for it. It is numbered 106/250 and is not shiny at all. So that about does it for todays post. Maybe something exciting will drop in the mail tomorrow, we will see.

mailman, bring me no more blues

CARD SHOW SATURDAY!! Today was the monthly card show in Meriden. I went right after work and browsed the tables, talked to some of the guys selling stuff. It was a pretty good time. Below is a couple of the cards I picked up, in addition to those there were many Blue Jays aquired. Some refractors, numbered stuff, shiny stuff, and alot of regular stuff. I also picked up the last 3 Turkey Reds I needed for 2010 Series 1, a couple of the Target retro backs and a Halladay mini blue back. Good stuff. I also picked up three packs of Topps; 1984, 1986 and 2010. Nothing really special in any of them, it was just cool to open them up. I never opened a pack of anything earlier than 1987 Topps.

The Keys is special because he was my favorite Jay as a kid. I'm not sure why the McGowan is in a special Topps case, but it is, it is numbered to 99, and was only a buck. The Cruz mirror red was $3, and the Jays dual relic was $5. Not too shabby.

It was also a mail day! Three small packages arrived, all from eBay auctions. One had 10 2010 gold cards, and the other two are below:

My first 1951 Topps and my second 1953 Topps.

My second hat relic! I love the Canadian flag in the logo, real sweet. Thats about it, I'll post up the Million Card Giveaways from my box tomorrow, nothing special, just kinda fun.
